Hi, my name is Gypsy! I'm a petite little 3- to 4-year old American Eskimo female who weighs a mere 17 pounds. I'm a very special girl who needs a very special home, with a VERY special kind of person. My chances of finding that are quite slim, but that's OK. I will just stay here in my foster home...probably forever. My foster mom and dad love me very much and understand how special I am.

I was found as a stray at a greyhound track in Rhode Island. For two weeks the dog catcher tried to catch me, but I was having none of that. Nobody can catch me unless I WANT to be caught. You see, I was watching those greyhounds and was practicing to race with them, so now I am very fast! Just when they were going to give up on me, they left the door to their van open, and I ran up and jumped right in! They thought they had caught me, but the truth is, I caught them! :o) So off to the shelter we went, where I stayed for 10 months. I was loved very much by one shelter worker, but nobody else could get near me, so they said I had to get placed or be put to sleep.

So ERU sent someone to come pick me and get me out of this place. Well, I was a very frightened little girl. When that person tried to get me I bit her, so she wouldn't take me. It seemed like I had pretty much signed my own death sentence, and there was no hope for me now. Luckily for me, since I had bit someone, the shelter had to keep me 10 days before putting me down. During that time, my current foster mom heard about me. She didn't want to see me die, and she felt that she was up to the task of trying to help me (she didn't think I was as "bad" as I am).

She sent her boyfriend up to NY meet with someone from the shelter. It must have been the hottest day of the year when he went to get me, so she told him to take her car, because it was new and had a great air conditioner. Since it was reported that I hated men, I was transported in a crate. Well, don't you just know the car broke down on the way home, and we were stuck along the interstate for over 8 hours! Fortunately the car's AC still worked, even though it wouldn't drive, so at least it was cool while we waited for my foster mom to bring the truck to tow us home.

So off to my new foster mom and dad's I went. Things were going pretty well until someone stopped by my foster parents' home. I was hanging out in the house when he walked in, and I went crazy because I knew he didn't live there. I bit him three times before my foster dad could get me off of him. Now I have to be locked away when someone comes to the house, or I will bite them.

My foster mom takes over here:

After that incident I realized Gypsy was more than I could handle by myself, so I contacted the Pennsylvania University of Veterinary Medicine. I'm trying to help this little girl the best way I know how. She's what they call a fear biter, and the problem is, she's afraid of almost everything. She is wonderful with her foster dad, as he can do anything with her. She prefers him over me and follows him everywhere he goes. She even goes out on the road trucking with him and is extremely protective of that truck like you would never believe!

Gypsy cannot be around new people, though once she knows you she's fine--but that's the Catch 22! You have to be able to read her body language and monitor her at all times with other people. I don't think she will ever be able to be trusted around new people, as she is very fast and will have someone by the pant leg before you can bat your eyes. She's a potential liability to anyone who owns her, because this isn't just a dog who might bite--she WILL bite!

Gypsy therefore needs a very special home, if there is even one out there for her. In a quiet home without visitors, she'll have a better chance to get to know you, though it will take a lot of patience and understanding. Due to her temperament, anyone considering adopting Gypsy will be very carefully screened. But if you're that kind of extraordinary person, you will see her turn into a real sweetheart for you!

Gypsy is spayed, current on all her vaccinations, heartworm negative and on heartworm, flea and tick prevention. She recently underwent a successful operation to fix her "cherry" eye. Gypsy is housebroken and is a very good girl in the house. She doesn't tear anything up and is not destructive in any way. She's fine with cats and most other dogs, and she loves to play, but more than anything, Gypsy loves to cuddle.

We're still hoping Gypsy might be claimed by her very own special forever family, but we understand why that probably won't happen. It's hard to open your home to someone with Gypsy's issues. But would you consider sponsoring an otherwise sweet little girl like her? ERU would certainly appreciate whatever you're able to contribute to her care. Thank you!

Special Needs: If you are not able to adopt me, perhaps you would consider sponsoring me. If you would like to help Eskie Rescuers United defray the cost of my medical expenses, please click on the "DONATE" button at the bottom of this page and type my name in the "PAYMENT FOR" box. Thank you so very much. All my Eskie hugs and kisses to you!

Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state.

If I'm not local to you, as explained above, and you really have your heart set on me, you will have to make special arrangements so ERU can get me to you safely (for example, flying me to you at your own expense, or paying a transport group to drive me to you). Note: We may ask that you to make a donation to cover transport costs if the distance is great and we have trouble finding transport drivers.

There is an adoption fee required; and, please be aware, Eskie Rescuers United will not adopt out its dogs as outdoor dogs.

Eskie Rescuers United American Eskimo Dog Rescue, Inc. is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Please click the donation button below to make a tax-deductible donation through PayPal and help make a difference to even one American Eskimo dog!
