Emmy's heart murmur appears stable at the moment (8/2011) but will need to be monitored closely. Emmy has some serious cognitive issues which we now believe are due to advanced dementia. We initially thought she was deeply depressed because of her rough lot in life. Our vet agrees that Emmy has issues with sadness and anxiety but she feels that Emmy has serious and significant dementia (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction). Emmylou will need a very, very special home. Maybe an older retired person or couple. She needs someone who is home most of the time and someone who is very patient and will just let her be who she is. Emmy needs a quiet environment. I would love to see her in a home where she is the only dog (or maybe one other senior)... I don't want her to get lost in the shuffle of a busy house. She needs a home with few stairs. She has trouble with stairs. She is definitely not a cuddlebug and prefers to just do her own thing. She is at her best with a calm, consistent routine and plenty of gentle affirmation.
Emmylou, is now taking an expensive drug,(Previcox) and is on a special diet Hills BD, We hope this will help her quality of life. More about Emmylou of St. Thomas, PAGood with Dogs Special Needs: Emmylou has advanced dementia and struggles quite a bit. She also has a heart murmur. It is stable and requires no medication at this time but it will need to be monitored. Emmy is a sweet girl who just wants a quiet home with kind folks who will just let her grow old gracefully. Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state. Other Pictures of Emmylou of St. Thomas, PA (click to see larger version):
