Learn more about the American Eskimo Dog.
Hi, my name is Prancer! I'm a 2- to 3-year old small standard-sized American Eskimo female who weighs 24 pounds. I got my name because the shelter where I came from said all I did was prance around. When I'm happy I prance, and I have a lot to be happy about right now! I was picked up as a stray in Trenton, NJ, where life was hard on the streets with nobody to feed me or take care of me. Luckily for me someone found me and sent me to the shelter. My picture was put on Petfinder.com and the nice people at ERU called the shelter and asked, "Does that little girl need out?" They said, "She sure does, she needs someone to take care of her." So here I am in foster care. Life has not always been very good for me. Nobody took care of me for a long time, and when I got here my foster mommy was shocked to see the condition I was in. My beautiful coat was so badly matted from living on the streets that I needed to be shaved down and start all over again. I feel much better now, and my fur should grow back quickly, especially since I'm eating good nutritious food! I also arrived with nasty-looking gashes on my front legs, so I had to go to the vet to be checked out. The nice vet took good care of me. He treated my legs, gave me all my vaccinations and tested me for heartworm. Hooray! I'm negative! Now my foster mommy has me on heartworm, flea and tick prevention meds to make sure I stay healthy. I just got spayed so I'm all ready to go to my new home. I'm housebroken and crate-trained, though I don't need a crate since I never get into trouble. I'm a mellow girl and not at all food aggressive. But I do try to steal the cats' food when nobody is watching--and darn if someone doesn't always seem to catch me!! HeHe! I'm a little different from all the other Eskies here, in that I'm more biscuit in color than they are. That may be because I might have a little dash of something else in me, but that just makes me that much more special! Did I tell you I like kids? How about that? I also like all the people I have met so far too. I was very shy when I first got here and would hide under the bed most of the time. I rarely took any treats. I tolerated the other dogs and cats but would not play or even go near them much. I'm really starting to blossom now, coming out to seek treats more often. I even come out to visit sometimes. I still don't really play with the other dogs, but at least I will come out more when they are around. The only time I show any signs of possessiveness is if someone tries to take my sleeping spot under the bed. HEY, that's my spot!!! But I never act that way toward humans, just to the other dogs and cats who try to claim the territory I've staked out for myself. I think in my former life I was a circus dog, because I can walk the whole way across the room on my back legs! I just love walking on my back legs! My foster mommy keeps telling me to expect a big surprise. She says someone is going to come along and take me to my own forever home, give me my very own bed and shower me with all their love and affection. I'm already so excited about my new life here. Can it really get any better than this? Because I'm so versatile I would be good for an older family or a young family with children. I will fit in anywhere--provided, that is, that I'm treated kindly and lovingly. After the hard life I've had so far, don't you think I deserve that? Wouldn't you love to adopt me and make me part of your family? If you give me a chance at a wonderful new life, I'll be forever grateful and will show you just how much, every day of my life! If you're interested in me and would like more information, please contact Wanda at: wanda@eskierescuersunited.org or feel free to e-mail my foster daddy directly at: bill@eskierescuersunited.org. Better yet, you can go to our web site at: www.eskierescuersunited.org and fill out an adoption application for me! Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state. I'm in Centreville, VA with my foster daddy, Bill. To get me to you, we can do what's called an "Eskie Railroad," which is a group of volunteer drivers who will each drive a certain portion of the transport. (We always ask that you, as the adopter, help out by taking the final leg.) If I'm not local to you, as explained above, and you really have your heart set on me, you may have to make special arrangements so ERU can get me to you safely (for example, flying me to you at your own expense, or paying a transport group to drive me to you). There is a $150 adoption fee required, and please be aware that Eskie Rescuers United will not adopt out its dogs as outdoor dogs. Thank you, and lots of Eskie hugs and kisses to you! and#9829;Prancerand#9829;
