Holly was a special Eskie puppy and she got special treatment -- Holly was flown by a group of caring volunteer pilots to get medical attention. This group is called "Flying Paws". Their mission is to provide fast air transportation for special needs animals from rescue groups, fosters, or shelters.
Holly was fostered by our Treasurer, Bill and by Paulette H., during her recovery. Holly now lives with a wonderful family and two other Eskies! Here is her story as posted on www.flyingpaws.com: Holly: An American Eskimo Puppy Needed to Reach Special Veterinary Care Holly was all puppy. At 5 months of age she just wanted to give kisses, wiggle and play with everyone. Holly broke her rear leg. She needed to reach a special veterinary hospital in Chattanooga, TN. All attempts at ground transport had fallen through. Flying Paws was contacted [by Eskie Rescuers United] and arrangements were made to bring Holly to the Manassas Airport. There Larry and David were waiting to fly her to Chattanooga. Holly had the time of her life at the airport. She was able to meet new people, who just loved her, run through the lobby and to give kisses. But her greatest thrill was to ride in an aircraft. She not only was able to ride in the airplane but spent her time in the cockpit. The pilots just could not leave this little "lover" in the kennel so they picker her up and she flew the whole distance in one of their laps. When they landed at Chattanooga, Paulette of Eskie Rescuers United reported that as the plane taxied up she could see the heads of the pilots and between them the head of Holly. Holly was watching all that was going on around her. The following day Monday, Holly was in surgery. The good news is that she did very well, the not so good news was that they were unable to save her leg. Today Holly is a happy and loved Eskie with a family in Alabama. She has recovered and appears to be doing very well on three legs. September Update: From Holly's new mom. Holly has a nickname: Miss Licky. She is a special, special dog. But, she is Naughty!!!!. Chews on Everything!!! Baseboards, drywall, down pillows, comforts, sheets, shoes, laundry, plants... You name it!!! Everyone loves Miss Licky. Whenever she sees someone she almost wiggles herself right out of her own body with excitement. I've never know a more people-centered dog. She is healthy as an ox. She has the energy of 8 dogs. I have been taking her on off-leash doggie hikes with 25+ other dogs who are much larger. The hikes are 5+ miles long through mountain trails and pretty strenuous..... she amazes everyone. She is the littlest one on the hikes and no one knows she is three legged until she stops to enough to be petted. Nope, we would not trade little naughty girl for the world. Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state. |
