Meet Foxy!
Foxy is a show-stopping, handsome young male......a more perfect looking American Eskimo would be hard to find. He is estimated to be about 3 years old, small at 16.5 pounds, neutered, up to date on all vaccines, heart worm negative, current on all preventatives, and house-broken.
What an adorable and affectionate love-bug this boy is! There is nothing he would enjoy more than snuggling up with you on the sofa with a big bowl of popcorn, to watch a movie. Young Eskimo's are usually very exuberant, but Foxy is a little bit more laid back and lower energy than the breed norm, which makes him a nice candidate for an owner who is also a little lower energy. Foxy enjoys snoozing on or near the sofa, playing with his toys, and zipping through the dog door to enjoy the outdoors in his fenced in back yard. Foxy is very smart and alert, and like most Eskimo's, is naturally wary of strangers and other dogs. Eskimos need to be part of the family with a firm, consistent, confident pack leader, and Foxy is no exception to this.
While Foxy sounds almost too god to be true, he does have his issues. Currently, Foxy is living in a home with three other dogs, so it could be said that he gets along with other dogs. But Foxy doesn't really like other dogs, especially other males - and he doesn't want to play or be otherwise engaged with them. He is not a dog for someone who wants to go to the dog park, or for someone who is looking for the neighborhood social and dog-friendly Eskimo. Foxy would rather bark and act "bossy" at other dogs who gets too close to him or challenge him.
Foxy is also currently living in a home with a 6 year old child, and again, it could be said he gets along well with children. But this child also knows how to behave around dogs. Foxy is very nervous and fearful around any sudden or fast movements, which pretty much describes most children - so we are recommending he not be in a home with young children.
We don't know Foxy's history, but his fearful behavior suggests some possible mistreatment. While all Eskimo's need a firm, consistent and confident pack leader, Foxy particularly requires this. He needs an experienced dog owner, one preferably experienced with the breed, whom he can learn to trust. Once he does, he becomes very protective, and because of this, he might be better suited to a single owner - unless both owners are consistent in their treatment of Foxy.
To sum up Foxy's ideal forever home:
He is not for a novice dog owner - must be an experienced dog owner, and preferably with an Eskimo
No other dogs, unless they are older and very quiet and submissive
No young children
Because of his moderate energy level, he would be very suitable for an older, lower energy owner - either a single person or a consistent couple
A fenced yard would be ideal, plus a commitment to walk Foxy at least 45 minutes a day
Foxy is currently being fostered in Clermont, FL. His adoption fee is $250. If you would like more information on Foxy, please email dyanlaphan@aol.com, or complete an adoption application at www.eskierescuers.org.
