![]() Little Miss Muffett found her way into rescue after being picked up as a stray along with two other eskies in Michigan- Angel and Simple Simon. Of the three, Muffett tested heartworm positive, needed to be spayed and had a very large bladder stone that required surgery to be removed. Little Miss Muffett won the heart of the good samaritan that found her, she was also a vet tech and knew what kind of special care Muffett needed. Every day, Little Miss Muffett went to work with her caregiver- she was the ambassador for the staff and even the vet's own daughter came to visit every day just so that she could take Muffett on a walk. Even though she went through heartworm treatment without too many difficulties, it wasn't until she was spayed that she developed problems. After living a life of neglect and had never received any vet care, Little Miss Muffett passed away in the home of her caregiver. During her time in rescue, Muffett never let on how sick she really was, even in the end, her fluffy white tail wagged. Her caregiver will never forget this wonderful little spirit and neither will we. ![]() Mayor joined the ‘Bradley Bunch’ back in April of 2006. His name suited him — he had eluded Detroit’s Animal Control all spring; preferring to hang out at the mansion and grounds of Detroit’s mayor. He tested a “strong” heartworm positive, so he wasn’t put up for adoption. The big and burly Animal Control officer had tears in his eyes when Mayor’s rescuer came to pick him up — the officer was so relieved that Mayor would have a chance at a new life. Mayor had touched him; he did that with everyone he met, whether in person or through the newsy, heart-warming updates that his foster mom Mary posted to her fellow rescuers. Mayor had such a gentle, mellow, sweet way about him — he became Mary’s shadow and would sit by her quietly every morning when she had her coffee on the porch swing. Mr. B., Mary’s resident Eskie was his best pal and would hover over Mayor whenever he sneezed or coughed. Whenever Mayor would walk through the house all the other Eskies would stand and follow! He truly was Mary's Mayor. Mayor had some interested adopters but when his health prevented or slowed his adoption, it was almost a relief knowing that he wouldn’t be leaving Mary. We laughed and cried along with Mary as she nurtured Mayor through heartworm treatment; we cheered when Mayor’s “bump on the nose” tested benign and then cried when the next specialist reversed the diagnosis. He died in November. Mayor Quimbey was never adopted. It just wasn’t meant to be. You see, he found his forever home -- with his foster Mary. The author, Jon Katz, writes touchingly about a “forever dog” and how people instantly know what that means. Mayor was Mary’s forever dog. Until it was his time to cross the bridge, he would be loved and nurtured by Mary -- he just wasn’t meant to go anyplace else. He had found his ‘forever home’. He’s up there now, pain-free… at the bridge... waiting by the swing. ![]() Princess was only with ERU for a few days. She was rescued from a shelter where she lost the most precious possession that she ever had, her owner. Once this happened, she lost her will to live and stopped eating and drinking. Upon taking her to the vet, it was discovered that she had an inoperable cancer which was causing her pain. But in her last few days she regained what she lost. A loving owner to see her to the rainbow bridge. ![]() Sierra Snow's time in rescue was short lived. After being saved from a scary shelter, undergoing several surgeries and charming everyone along the way, she only knew her forever family for a few short weeks before she decided that her work on earth was done. Sierra Snow was a favorite of many and her tragic loss will be mourned by all. She taught others that no matter what, never give up hope that a furever home will be found. Her foster families and adopting family will never forget her diva personality- she now awaits at the Bridge but she is not alone. Sierra Snow was so special, she even had her own theme song- "The shelter in Pennsylvania was frightful. But the puppy, she's so delightful. And since she's found a new forever home. Let it Snow (wiggle), Let it Snow (wiggle), Let it Snow (wiggle)" ![]() Snow White was tied to a box the first 12 years of her life until some kind person noticed her laying in her yard in the same spot. The owners relinquished the urine and feces covered dog to the concerned citizen and then she was taken to ERU. Snow was a very sick girl. She had a leaking bladder and couldn't stand from being so ill with heartworm and severe arthritis in her hind legs. Her coat had quite a few bald spots which is a sign of poor nutrition. Snow even had a secondary infection due to the urine being held against the skin caused by her lying in it. To make matters worse, Snow could not withstand the heartworm treatment and a sanctuary would not take her without being treated. Catch 22. The suffering for Snow White was getting worse so it was decided that this little girl had suffered enough. Snow White got into rescue in April, 2005 but was truly free in September, 2005.
